WHAT’S YOUR PART IN ALL THIS?
The lady in my team asked to see me after our task for the day was done. It had been a grueling time and fatigued, all I desired was a hot shower and comfortable bed but duty called and waited I did. She soon came to the point of her request, seeking assistance to help her son find an internship role for the summer. It ordinarily wouldn’t have been a difficult request to grant save for the fact one gets multiple requests of a similar nature every other day. Complicating matters even more was an economy that wasn’t crazy on recruitments and many job seekers that weren’t ready to put in the time. I took the details and mentally notched it away to see see how truly the wanted this opportunity and what might just open up. It didn’t take long to figure out how hungry the mother was but I was yet to get a sense of the young man to gauge his understanding of what was really at stake when recommendations are made so I held my peace. One fateful day, a young photographer hustling at an event I attended introduced himself as the one whose mum had reached out to me. I left it at that but kept an eye on him through the day. A few days later, I ran into him again at a speaking engagement I was invited for and again kept an eye on him. He was polite, respectful, diligent and professional in carrying out his duties and when I asked him why he was doing this, he informed me it to help out at home and make ends meet for his studies.
The Lord God Almighty in setting out the framework of the universe at creation ensured that everything needed something else to survive and multiple things to excel. In the order of life, the opportunities presented to each individual could come at any time but if it is to be yours often requires your taking an active part. Our actions when we don’t think people are watching by far outweighs what we do when conscious of eyes on us. Observing the young man that day led me to take a bet on him and make the calls that eventually granted an opening to intern which he followed up on and secured himself.
