The traffic was building up as suddenly as often happens in Lagos where it is difficult to pinpoint what may give rise to it. Rush hour was approaching so more vehicles were on the streets and patience would soon be sorely tempted. Suddenly one impatient driver sees an opening and promptly switches to the opposite lanes and zooms down the road, oblivious and absolutely with no regard to the safety of drivers coming towards him. That there were traffic officers stationed along the road was not enough to deter him. Within minutes he is gone, leaving everyone else stuck in traffic. As far as he is concerned, they are all fools and he is the wisest of them all.

It doesn’t take long for another to follow his example. Not only was he gone, no one stopped him, no one arrested him and no one fined him so off the next one did, climbing over the road divider and on to the other side. Soon he too was disappearing into the horizon and showcasing the rewards for breaking the law. Next was a police van full of armed men and the thus far law abiding drivers felt a sense of relief that they would put an end to the madness but alas they too sped down the road and continued on their jolly way home. Seeing that the gift was an early arrival at home, others began to follow suit rapidly taking over both outgoing and incoming lanes. The end result was complete chaos.

The Most High God once creation was done handed over the care and administration of the earth to man. He appointed man as the caretaker and superintendent overseer to ensure that order remained and chaos was kept at bay. In a complete abuse of power, man handed over authority to the master of darkness and disorder ensuring that everything tended to chaos without the twin application of the strong arm of law and power of enforcement. The law on its own can’t stand and knowledge of what is right is not enough to compel man to do right. Until the cats begin to enforce righteousness by holding law breakers truly accountable and applying justice without fear or favour, we will continually end up in chaos as the rats run riot in our land.

May righteousness return to this land soon.
