CA-COVID BEGIN BREAD DONATION

- ADEFEMI AKINSANYA FROM ARISE NEWS LAGOS

For the coalition against Covid-19, the journey to feed millions of people started with a loaf of bread. Five thousand of them were given out across three distribution centres on day one. The donation began at Tinubu Square on Lagos Island where men, women and children were able to benefit. A beneficiary said “I will like to appreciate those people that gave us this bread. We thank them, we appreciate them and those who have being giving. You know we are many and this thing cannot be enough for us but we really appreciate them”.

We travelled the short distance to Lekki where another CACOVID bread distribution centre has been set up to attend to a bigger crowd of people. Even in the pouring rain CA-COVID said they are dedicated to make sure food resources reach out to people who need them regardless of weather. We then arrived at the new market space in the Oniru area where CA-COVID bread was shared out to people who need them. CA-COVID joined forces with Abisola Dejonwo-Tokan the owner of Dejabys. A bakery which specializes in butter rich bread and here is what she has to say, “I started this initiative about a week ago and CA-COVID decided to support us by sponsoring the initiative of giving and helping relief the hunger situation going on in the country as a result of covid-19 that is around and so far, so good it’s been good. Today is the first day with CA-COVID sponsoring us”.

Within the minute of finishing up in Oniru, more cars loaded with bread reached Muri Okunola park in Victoria Island where once again, a group of the hungry and homeless gathered within seconds. A beneficiary said “I have been having accommodation problems for the past six years. I have been homeless, jobless no money to feed. I stay here at Muri Okunola park outside gate day and night and things have been very difficult for me. No source of income, no investment no nothing especially we the poor people that are fighting for daily survival, it has been terrible with us but we thank God Almighty that we still have good Nigerians that are coming out to help us with food and drinks and also bread”.

This spread out reach is expected to last for two weeks. In the meantime, bigger food relief packages are on the way as CA-COVID continues its journey to reach 1.7 million households struggling to survive economic effects of the covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria.
