AKRAN LAUNCHES BOOKS IN LAGOS

- Yinka Olatunbosun

Yinka Akran, a young Nigerian female writer is ready to launch her second and third books in Lagos at De Renaissance Hotel, Ikeja. The event will hold on November 29. The books, Dad Died and Revamping Me, which explore a wide range of subject matter are the latest literary works of this graduate of English linguistics at the University of Jos. Akran had worked as a journalist with such soft-sell magazines as Prime People, Expression and Hints. She had a stint in the money market as the head treasurer at Magnificent Bancshares Limited. In 1999, Akran became her own boss as the CEO of Scribbles ‘N’ Images and on this platform she launched her first book, A Total You.

Scribble’N’Images essentially handles the business of writing books, scripts, business profiles and proposals. Other areas of the organisation’s professional expertise include editing, creating and developing concepts for television and reality shows, as well as productions.

Dad Died is written from the point of view of an 11-year-old girl, who has lost her dad. As she struggles to deal with the loss, she discovers he died from emphysema, a smoking-related disease. That raises many rhetorical questions such as: Could one die from smoking cigarettes? Did her dad know that was possible? Could his death have been avoided? The protagonist is even more scared when she finds out that she, and millions other children all over the world are endangered as passive smokers, including her uncle’s unborn child whose mother is still smoking.

In the book, Revamping Me, the author recounts her intimate experiences in a journal format that chronicles her struggle through a life full of unfulfilled dreams and hopes. Hers are familiar occurrences that any wife, mum and manager would find appealing. It is a book for every woman and the man who seeks to understand his woman.
