THRU’ THE EYES OF AN AFRICAN GETS 3 AMVCA NOMINATIONS
Thru’ the Eyes of an African, the captivating travel documentary programme that airs on DStv, has again been nominated for an award. This time the prestigious, continent- wide Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards ( AMVCA) nominated three of the television travel programme’s episodes for Best Documentary of the Year. The titles of the three episodes are: Gift of the Nile; Shashamane, Southern Ethiopia and The Massai Mara Adventure.
The award ceremony which takes place on March 7 at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos will see Nollywood stars, producers, directors, script writers, makeup artists, top celebrities in Africa’s entertainment and film industries as well as prominent personalities from different parts of the world, in attendance.
The multiple awards- winning travel connoisseur, Yvonne Bassey, who produces and directs the programme has over the years, brought Africa’s many compelling sites, historic cities, colourful festivals, amazing cultures, diverse wildlife and even near- extinct customs, into the homes of many.
Her quest to promote some of the lesser known African destinations, alongside the culture of the people has taken her on a whirlwind journey of exhilarating and timeless destinations that has not ended, while affording her encounters with some of the most fascinating people and traditions that the continent has to offer.
Yvonne’s documentaries and efforts to uplift Africa have earned her successive national laurels over the years, including awards from the Nigeria Media shows Akpos’ honesty and stupidity, Old Soldier ’ s hilarious and rigidity, Lovina’s obsession with money, Ajaka’s loyalty to alcohol. Emma’s deceitful drive to be ahead in life and Jane’s love for attention.”
He continued: “I’ve always wanted to do something on TV after working on Heaven’s Gate and Oasis. Akpos & Company talks about youthful exuberance and the challenge of a young male child”.
The director, Abay Esho who directed ‘ Spider ’, ‘ Heaven’s Gate’, ‘ Dear Mother’ and ‘ Safari’ says, “Akpos is a global fictional story. What we try to do is to bring Akpos to life. Akpos is a comedy that all family members will love to watch and laugh and identify with.”
The family drama stars a potpourri of old and new thespians like Florence Onuma as Lovina, Jerry Onwordi aka Baba Nothing Spoil as Ajaka, Eliel Etete as Old Soldier, Mario Davidson Omasoro as Akpos, Adaeze Jacqueline- Ajah as Akpos’ sister called Ada, and Wilson Irabor Brown as Goddy. The comedy series premieres next quarter.
