Ghana’s prime golf destinatio­n, Achimota Golf Club will be open for business after it was closed to allow for intensive renovation since last year.

Captain of the club, Rene Gameli-Kwame disclosed to THISDAY that the course was closed for a major overhaul to enable it rate as one of the best golf courses in Africa.

Achimota Club is Ghana’s oldest golf course and is in located in Accra, the capital city.

The course will be reopened in February 2014 as part of the elaborate activities to celebrate the 80th anniversar­y of the club.

The redesign is being undertaken by the acclaimed Irish profession­al golfer, Paul McGinley who has been appointed as the Captain of the Europe team for the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, Scotland.

McGinley, who has four wins on the European Tour, finished in tied for 6th position at the PGA Championsh­ip held at Whistling Straits in 2004, his best career flourish in a Major Championsh­ip.

Achimota is a destinatio­n frequented by Nigerian amateur golfers from Ikoyi and Abuja for initiative­s to strengthen social and business ties between golfers from Ghana and Nigeria.

Gameli-Kwame, who led the Ghanaians on their recent visit to Abuja where they were drubbed 51 ½ -23 ½ by IBB Club for activities to mark Nigeria’s 53rd Independen­ce Day activities, said the imprints of McGinley will leave visitors drooling.

“The ongoing efforts will totally transform Achimota into one of the best golf courses in Africa at the end of the renovation exercise. We are very proud that the redesign is being handled by a renowned golfer in the person of Paul McGinley, who will captain the European team to the Ryder Cup in 2014”, Gameli-Kwame said.

The reopening will come ahead of Ghana’s 57th Independen­ce Day celebratio­n in March 2014, and afford Achimota the moment to exact revenge from IBB Club to whom they lost on their last two visits to Abuja.
