Vocational Training Centre Holds 20th Inter-house Sports

As part of activities to celebrate the 60th anniversar­y of the Nigeria Society for the Blind, the Vocational Training Centre for the Blind, Oshodi, will on Thursday hold its 20th annual inter-house sports at the Yaba College of Education Sports Centre.

Speaking at a press briefing yesterday, the Chairman, executive council of the centre, Mrs. Bola Agbaje, noted that in addition to the academic curriculum the centre believe that a healthy body stimulates a healthy mind.

“Physical activity stimulates developmen­t and social interactio­n by boosting confidence levels. It enhances body awareness and self image through the emotional support of other athletes,“Agbaje said.

Continuing, she said,“sports is even more important to a visually impaired person because it opens an avenue to do something more than the restricted mobility that loss of sight has caused.”

Agbaje said the feat of Nigerian athletes at the last Paralympic Games in London has proven that the country has a warehouse of talent in ou disabled.

Some of the events that would be competed fo include, March past, 50 metres race, three legged race, skittle game and walking race.

Others include shot put, tug of war, invitation­al relay race, old students race, searching game, staff race and parents race.

One of the students, Funmi Olasunkanm­i, who represente­d Nigeria at the London Paralympic­s said she will take advantage of the sports meet to prepare for the National Sports Festival slated for Calabar, Cross River State.
