Danjuma: I Do Not Canvass Support for Any Candidate

Unlike former military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), who urged Nigerians to give President Goodluck Jonathan the benefit of the doubt, former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), yesterday said he does not canvass support for any presidential candidate.

His position on the issue, according to him, was premised on the fact that he was not a member of any political party.

Danjuma, who visited the president in his residence at the Presidential Villa, told State House correspondents that what transpired between him and Jonathan was “confidential.”

While informing journalists not to speculate on what transpired between him and the president, Danjuma equally said: “I came to visit the president and find out how things are going. I have been abroad. I just came back.”

On whether he was going to canvass support for the president for the elections, he replied: “I don’t canvass. I am not in any of the political parties. The president is the president of the country.”

Though Danjuma did not disclosed what he discussed with the president, findings indicated that the conduct of peaceful elections topped the agenda of their discussions.

Last Sunday, Jonathan met behind closed-doors with former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) and former South African President, Thabo Mbeki at the presidential villa.

Though the outcome of the meeting was not made public, it was however gathered that the conduct of free, fair, credible and peaceful elections was what topped the agenda of that meeting.
