Are you comfortable with how the federal government is handling the Ekiti election rigging tape?
The issue is that transferring one police officer from one location to the other is like moving the problem from here to another location. The problem will go with him if he is transferred to another location. He will still be the same Mbu. What is important is for the IGP to exercise the appropriate disciplinary action against Mbu. Or the IGP needs to counsel Mbu to work in accordance with the constitution. We will insist on this demand. As a political party, our position is very clear. What we have said is that the federal government should investigate the Ekiti election rigging tape and whoever is found guilty should be prosecuted. That is our position. If the Presidency does anything contrary to our position that will be certainly unacceptable to our party because we are now pursuing the roles of making sure that whoever has done something wrong should be brought to book. Until we start to imbibe these values, we will see ourselves driving away from our democratic process.
Ekiti and Ondo States are currently in the hand of Peoples Democratic Party. There is a report that the governors have collected N2 billion to rig elections in these states. Do you think votes will count here? We are working hard to make our votes count. First, we will make sure that we engage credible, dedicated and strong party agents, who will be able to do the jobs very effectively in all polling units. We are equally advising our people to stand around after voting and make sure that their votes are counted before they leave polling units. Once we are able to monitor how votes are cast, the counting process and recording it from polling units – incidents of rigging will to some extent be reduced.
The key thing is that we are able to police the activities within the polling units. Since there will not be use of military, scaring people away will be out of it for now so that people will be able to cast their votes. I am not saying rigging can be completely eliminated, but will be significantly reduced considering the system Prof. Jega is proposing. I mean the plan to use card readers for the coming elections. There is division in Ogun APC. This has compelled some members to defect to SDP. Likewise, APC is plagued with internal rift in Oyo State. How have you been repackaging your party in these states for victory at polls?
