Five Women Deliver Babies in IDPs’ Camp in Sokoto, Says NEMA

- Mohammed Aminu

At least five women have been delivered of babies at the Internally Displaced People (IDP) camp at Kalambaina area of the Sokoto metropolis.

The camp was established by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) person displaced from Baga, Borno State.

The Assistant Head of NEMA, Sokoto Zonal Office, Mr. Thickman Tanimu, who disclosed this to journalists in Sokoto at the weekend, said the women gave birth to five babies in the last three days.

Tanimu said the five new born babies include three baby girls and two boys,

“Two babies were delivered on May 7, while on transit to Sokoto, two delivered on May 8 and the other one on May 9. And the mothers and children are hale and hearty,” he said.

He stated that over 2,000 IDPs were currently being camped at the Kalambaina Rehabilitation Centre, about eight kilometres away from the Sokoto metropolis.

Tanimu disclosed that the IDPs were evacuated by the agency from Geidam in Yobe State on May 6, 2015 to Sokoto, adding that 80 per cent of the affected persons are from Kebbi State, while the rest are indigenes of Sokoto state.

“As you are aware, these people were earlier displaced due to activities of insurgents in Doron-Baga in Borno and they fled to Gegeme in Difa state, Niger Republic as refugees.

“However, they were deported back to Geidam in Yobe State after the insurgents attacked their camp in Niger Republic. So, It was from Geidam that the IDPs were screened by the Agency and security agencies, while NEMA evacuated them to Sokoto,”Tanimu explained.
