Akwa United, Wikki Fire Blanks in Uyo

- Sam Nnaji

Free scoring Wikki Tourists failed to find the back of the net for the second time this season in their goalless draw with Akwa United at the Uyo Township Stadium yesterday evening.

Having been on an impressive run of 12 goals in their last six games, they came to a struggling Akwa United side hoping to continue their scoring spree but the home team’s sturdy defence blunted their attacks.

Godwin Obaje and Victor Yakubu led the line for the visitors but for all their first half pressure, they barely tested Femi Kayode in goal. It was a drab first half with both teams slugging it out in the middle of the field. Aniekpeno Udoh had a chance late in the first half but he was disposed before he could hurt the visitors.

Akwa United started better in the second period with the introduction of Ebube Okpokwu. The substitute set up Udoh but his turn and volley went wide. Nsikak Etim replied at the other end firing over the crossbar.

Abdulafeez Awakan was next to go close for Akwa United but again he couldn’t keep his strike down. Festus Umanah nodded wide from a corner kick while Halliru saved Aniekpeno’s snap shot. Mubarak Umar had a chance from a Wikki corner kick.

Godspower Igudia had two chances in the closing stages for the Home team but Umanah cleared the first off the line with Halliru beaten while he scuffed wide from three yards in stoppage time.

Wikki Tourists retained their place on 4th position with 14 points behind Gabros, Giwa and Sunshine Stars while Akwa United climbed a spot from 17th to 16th with eight points.
