THISDAY

Did you have the opportunity to present these views to the outgoing president Jonathan?

All those infectious diseases that affected PDP may affect the APC. Those whose diseases were not cured in PDP before they defected will infect others in APC. If you look at the way Nigeria is today, all the promises, all the expectations of Nigerians if not properly managed would be a minus for the incoming government.

They have great men, and would do everything humanely possible to see they succeed.

But all those promises can’t be met. In terms of politics and the next elections, PDP has a very great chance. Nigerians love PDP; they only rejected the products offered by the party. PDP now has an opportunity to go back and repackage. The blame game will not serve anybody any good. PDP has not done badly; it is not leaving power with shame. What about the Obasanjo Factor; what will PDP do with it? It’s just like the story of the Prodigal son, there is no way you will not go back to your father, even if your father is a mad man, you will not allow him to roam naked in the market place. PDP cannot build today without Obasanjo or even without apologising to him. Obasanjo meant well for PDP and the nation. I know this because I have been privileged to be a-go-between. Yes, I have been privileged to be trusted by President Jonathan to send me to consult with President Obasanjo on a highly sensitive matter.

The enthusiasm with which Obasanjo carried out the assignment confounded me. People like Obasanjo will be persuaded back to the party. Although I do not want to agree that he has resigned from the party, he only tore his membership card in anger. Membership card is a paper; it can be reissued. People like Oyinola will be brought back. Most of the PDP governors that went to APC can be regarded as immigrants. When law and order is restored, they will come back home. East or west, home is the best. What is it that will be done to bring them back? Let there be internal democracy; let PDP remove anti-intellectual anti-thinking mentality; let us work with the right materials and there

are a lot of them.

I presented a lot of private memos to him and that is not what I am going to reveal to you in public. There is nothing befalling PDP now that I did not envisage. The President is still my leader.

One of the greatest shocks I had was that a particular memo I wrote to the President on a particular sensitive issue and the role of a particular fellow, to my bewilderment a businessman that I knew who is not even my friend called my attention to it and advised me to be careful of some of the boys around the president. I was not deterred but I paid the big price.
