Infertility Challenges Can be Reduced, Says Expert

The Chief Executive Officer, Olive Branch Clinic, Lagos, Dr. Ikenna Emeka, has stated that infertility issues experienced by Nigerian couples can be reduced drastically, if affected persons embrace the In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) method. Emeka, who stated this during the official commissioning of Olive Branch Fertility Centre in Lekki, said the ever increasing reproductive challenge in the country needs to be matched with fertility centres that can provide solutions.

He said: “Infertility is a common and distressing problem, which often creates pressure in a previously stable and happy relationship. Peculiar to us in sub Saharan Africa is the large premium our culture places on immediate procreation and child bearing

“Olive Branch Fertility Centre is a child of necessity born with the objective of raising the standard of assisted conception practice in Nigeria which, invariably, would also add, to a very large extent, an appreciable value to the fertility challenges being faced by Nigerian couples,” he said.

Dr. Emeka, added that in view of these contending realities, the newly opened fertility centre will be committed to providing diverse range of medically approved and proven assisted reproduction therapy with the ultimate aim of putting smiles on the faces of Nigerian couples.

Also speaking at the commissioning, Nigeria’s renowned fertility and assisted conception icon, Prof. Oladapo Ashiru, in his remark, commended Dr Emeka for his vision and urged Nigerians to embrace the assisted reproductive initiatives which, according to him, “is about giving nature a helping hand.”

“With the opening of this fertility center and continuous research and practice, I am optimistic that fertility challenges will be brought to the barest minimum level in Nigeria,” he added.

While on a facility tour of the clinic, an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr Faye Iketubosin, expressed delight at the state of the art modern facilities available at the clinic. “I am quite impressed with the range and quality of medical equipment here and this sort of gives me a good impression of what the fertility centre would offer in terms of In-Vitro Fertilisation.”

In-vitro Fertilisation, according to experts, is the process by which a woman’s egg is fertilised by a man’s sperm outside the body.

Usually done through a laboratory procedure involving high monitoring and stimulation of the reproductive elements.
