Non-league Side Kukuruku Dragons Upset Giwa

-

Edo representatives Kukuruku Dragons yesterday recorded the biggest upset of the 2015 Federation Cup, when they defeated Glo Premier League side Giwa FC 5-4 on penalties after full and extra time ended 2-2 in the competition’s Round of 64.

Giwa FC were leading 2-0 at the Bako Kotangora Stadium in Minna, but the Edo youngsters had other ideas after their more illustrious opponents had a man sent off.

Dragons then made their extra man count with two well-struck goals to take the tie into extra time, which failed to produce a winner.

The Auchi-based held their composure, converting all their kicks in the ensuing penalties, to beat Giwa 5-4.

Another Edo side, BJ Foundation, who defeated Dragons in the state’s FA Cup final in April, also recorded a heart-warming 3-1 victory over Kumi Market in Ilorin.

Edo FA Chairman, Frank Ilaboya, who promised to reward Dragons if they beat Giwa said,“I told Dragons players and officials not to feel inferior because big names don’t play football and they did.

“We also gave BJ support ahead of their match. Edo State is proud of both teams. I have redeemed my pledge to Dragons,”enthused the FA boss last night.

He said the Edo FA board sent its Vice-chairman Alex Olaye and member, Ahmed Aigbona, to cheer up both teams in Ilorin and Minna respectively.

Sunshine Stars, crashed out to minnows, JAtete FC 3-1 while 3SC also lost to Plateau United 1-0.

Three-time Cup champions Heartland nearly suffered a scare at the hands of Nigeria Nation-Wide League (NNWL) side Bizi Cashless FC. However, they overcame the lower league team 2-1.
