Okonkwo Tells Churches to Go Beyond Preaching
The President of the Redeemed Evangelical Mission Worldwide (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo has called on churches to go beyond preaching the gospel and think of innovations and projects that will benefit the people and the community. He made this call when he commissioned a water project at Oke-Oriya, I Koro, Lagos State. The Liberty Centre, TREM Ikorodu, Lagos built the borehole water project.
Okonkwo, while commissioning the water project, commended the Liberty Centre of TREM for the initiative, saying, "By now churches should be looking beyond preaching the gospel by thinking about innovations that will be of benefit to the people. “I am excited to see that the area now has water; this project is very important. Water is refreshing; water is life; and for us to be able to provide that, it gives me joy.
"Our mission in TREM is not just disseminating the word of God but doing things that will be of need to not only our members but everybody.”
Okonkwo, who also commissioned the Children department of the church, in an interview, also commended the Liberty Centre of TREM for initiating and organizing the yearly Ikorodu Community Development Awards (ICDA).
“I am impressed with the ICDA project, because that is what the kingdom is all about. You are not supposed to be in an environment and people will not know you are there. The only way we can introduce people to God is to be where they are and speak their language.
“So when you come with projects like that and appreciate the people who have impacted the society, of course, it is also a way to say God is appreciating what they are doing. They may not be in church but they are also part of the kingdom doing things that will affect the masses. So I am excited about that initiative”, Okonkwo noted.
