The overall contribution of the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs) to Nigeria’s electricity generation capacity is expected to scale up to 4,700 megawatts (MW) with the federal government’s imminent inauguration of three more of its plants tomorrow. In all, the country may be generating about2,585.85MWacrossthecountry. The NIPPs however, will receive a boost in their generation capacity after the launch of three more plants next week. But all these will amount to little with the persistent scarcity of gas to fire the plants. The government disclosed last week that it would on Monday next week commission three more electricity plants under the NIPP scheme to bring toseventhenumberofsuchplantscommissioned under President Goodluck Jonathan. It added that the plants’ inauguration would mean that the NIPP generation plants built and managed by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Plc (NDPHC) on behalf of the three tiers of governmentcouldcontribute4,700MW to the national grid.
