‘Nigerians Will Resist Privatisation of BoI, Bank of Agriculture’

- Ibrahim Shuaibu in Kano

The Managing Director of Adhama Textiles and Garment Industry limited, Kano, Alhaji Dattijo Adhama has called on the federal government to shelve its plan to privatise the Bank of Industry (BOI) and the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), insisting that it would not augur well for Nigeria.

Adama said the shelving of privatisation of the two banks will help the government in its effort to revive the economy of the country especially the ailing industries across the country.

Speaking in Kano on Wednesday, Adhama explained that any attempt to privitise the two banks would be met with stiff resistance from Nigerians.

He said the two organisation were established to ensure economic growth and development of the country.

‘’If you privatise the Bank of Agriculture and Bank of Industry, you are delaying development, which they are meant to facilitate’’, he said.

He urged the federal government to come up with policies and programmes that would strengthen the banks to enable them meet the aspirations and yarnings of Nigerians.

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) recently announced its plans to commence the privatisation process of the BOA, BOI and the Nigeria Commodity Exchange (NCX).

The National Council on Privatisation (NCP) had in 2014, approved the privatisation of the three Development Finance Institutions.

The Council had directed the BPE to immediately invite the pre-qualified bidders that met the benchmark scores of 75 per cent in the initial evaluation to proceed to the financial bid opening stage.
