UniCem Debunks Report on Planned Relocation to Lagos

- Bassey Inyang

The United Cement Company of Nigeria Limited (UniCem) has denied claims making the rounds in some quarters that it was making plans to relocate from Calabar, the Cross River State capital to Lagos.

The UniCem debunked the claims following a publication made by the Cross River Stateowned Weekend Chronicle to the effect that the alleged planned relocation had caused internal crisis in the company.

However, UniCem has reacted to the speculated relocation plan, through a press statement, saying there was no iota of truth in the report.

The statement signed by UniCem’s Corporate Affairs Director, Mr. Ayi Ita Ayi and made available to journalists in Calabar yesterday was tagged: “UniCem Debunks Report of Relocation to Lagos.”

The statement reads in part: “The United Cement Company of Nigeria Limited (UniCem) has declared as false, a publication on the front page of the Weekend Chronicle of Friday, June 19, 2015 with the caption “Crisis rocks UniCem over relocation plan.”

Ayi said: “the report is false, misleading and lacking in truth.”

Ayi stated that UniCem operates in Calabar and will never be relocated to Lagos for any reason.

He further questioned why anyone should contemplate that the company with such a huge investment in Cross River State could relocate its assets to Lagos.

The Director expressed surprise over why, a reputable media organization such as the Nigerian Chronicle will not cross check facts before going to press on such a sensitive issue.

Ayi advised members of the public not to take, seriously, the said publication as nothing in the report reflects the state of affairs in the company.

Within the nation’s cement industry, UniCem is ranked as one of the leading manufacturer and supplier of high quality cement in the south-south and south-east of Nigeria. The company manufactures and sells the ‘UniCem 32,5R’ and ‘UniCem 42, 5’ Portland Limestone cement products.

Within Cross River State, UniCem is one of the major industrial developments, and with its state-of-the-art Cement Plant at Mfamosing, it has a capacity to produce 2.5 million tons of cement annually and currently it is expanding its capacity to deliver 5m metric tons in 2016.
