Preparations have commenced by the Ondo state government to launch its semi-mechanised Abattoir in Akure, the state capital, even as the state Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has ordered work should begin on the facility's roads immediately.

Briefing newsmen on preparations towards the successful take off of the millennium compliant Abattoir , the state's Commissioner for Information, Hon. Kayode Akinmade said government embarked on the project to ensure meats sold to public were processed in hygienic environment.

He also mentioned that butchers would spend less on their operation as government was determined to ensure patrons enjoy the facility at a very minimal cost.

Revealing that the provision will be of good economic benefit also to meat buyers in the state, the Commissioner offered that usage of the facility would be made mandatory for butchers.

He said the facility had the capacity to take care of 2,000 live Cows in four hours, adding that operators at the Abattoir would be able to access 11,000 litters of water per day, far in excess of the required 3,500 litters daily requirement.

Disclosing that the facility has provision for waste preservation, Akinmade said the preserved waste at the Abattoir would be converted to fertilizer for farmers to grow their plants.

"The Abattoir will be first of its kind around here when it becomes operational. All the wastes generated at the place would be converted to fertilizer because there is a facility for that also.

"It's one of the measures of government to ensure a healthy living for residents of the state and to also enhance the capabilities of operators in that sector of the economy as the butchers would be trained to handle the equipment at the Abattoir" he said.

According to the Commissioner, the Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko has also directed that the state's Asphalt Company, OSAC begin work immediately at the project site and ensure good road network within and around the facility.
