As part of efforts to enhance the skills of young programmers in Nigeria, Kiddogramming Consultant recently organised a competition for young developers of age five to seven in the junior category, as well as seven years and above in the senior category. During the competition, each child was made to solve programming problems and also create codes for stories and games. Programmes were written and submitted in Java or C++.

The competition was organised to help children learn using logical reasoning, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The contestants were judged based on their skills, verbal capacity and self-confidence.

In a statement, the founder of Kiddogramming Consultant, Chuka Iwuh, said “knowing how to programme helps kids understand and tinker with the world that they are living in is awesome. In the future, the amount of technology and our reliance on it will only increase.

“The students of today need to be able to not only consume this technology, but to understand and control it. The point is we want our kids to be able to make and change things, and to make things happen. They should be active participants in the global economy, not passive consumers. Do you want your child to be a thinker and innovator who can turn his or her ideas into reality? If so, encourage them to learn how to programme.”

Iwuh also said the mission of the consultant is to take programming to every child and school across Nigeria and redefine the way children think and tackle problems they face every day. He said the initiative would turn Nigerian children from being part of the globe to the ones that have a say on how it is shaped.

Kiddogramming recently partnered Early Excellence School, Ikoyi and its course has been integrated into the school’s curriculum.
