The Amuwo-Odofin solution/ community recently commenced free General Certificate in Examination (GCE) coaching classes for all students in the local government area.

Speaking at the programme held at Fifth Avenue Primary School, FESTAC, Lagos, the Assistant Headmistress, Mrs. Rita Idahosa, recalled how she was first approached by some members of the community to give approval for some classes to be used to lecture students who are to attend the free GCE classes. She said she declined at first as schools didn’t allow such lessons but when she was shown a letter of approval from the government she had to open some of the classrooms to be used for the coaching.

She observed that students are now dedicated to their studies and advised them not to take the free coaching for granted. “The teachers have worked hard and made huge sacrifices by committing their time and personal resources without being paid.” She expressed delight about the gesture, saying, “I am indeed touched and excited to be part of it.”

Some of the teachers also spoke about the coaching said they are happy to impart knowledge in the youths.

The convener of the Amuwo Solution, Mr. Remilekun Aremu, said the initiative is a way of giving back to the society what they have benefitted from it. “The citizens are too laidback about the present situation and Amuwo Solution has seen an opportunity to take a step in ensuring that we make an impact on the lives of the youths.

He said the coaching has been ongoing for some time, but it officially commenced in April this year, while the GCE tutoring began in late July and would end on September 11.

He said some of the challenges encountered before the commencement of the programme included low publicity and the youths were not forthcoming.
