FG Urged to Probe Accident between Senate Minority Leader and DiplomaticVehicles

- Okon Bassey

Although no life was lost, the federal government has been urged to investigate the recent accident that involved the vehicle of the Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio with Diplomatic Convoy in Abuja.

A concerned Nigerian and an Akwa Ibom-based legal practitioner, Mr. Godwill Udofia, who made the call yesterday in Uyo, said Nigerians should not pass judgment on who was at fault but the necessary government agencies like the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the police should be allowed to probe the cause of the accident and issue findings.

“Nigeria should not rush to pass judgment but government agencies like the FRSC and the Police should be allow to probe the accident to save the image of the country,” he maintained.

Udofia who spoke with THISDAY in his office, thanked God that no live was involved in the accident but however insisted that the image of the country was at stake because of the caliber of personalities that were involved hence the need for the federal government to probe the accident.

Senate Minority Leader and immediate past Governor of Akwa Ibom State had on Monday escaped death when his car involved in an accident with diplomatic vehicle for allegedly attempting to douse traffic light.

“In as must as I pity him for whatever injuries he must have sustained, from reports we heard and read, the accident came as a result of the convoy of the former governor not obeying traffic light, if what we are reading is true then it portrait Nigeria in a very bad light.

“The reason is that as a former governor now a Lawmaker of upper chamber of Nigeria Legislature, the question is if a law maker does not obey the law then who is the law made for. It is truism that the law is made by the superior to the inferior.

“The answer is no. Nigeria constitution is respecter of no person. If it is true that his convoy cause the accident this will be a big test to the present federal government of President Muhammadu Buhari who mantra is to fight impunity and no impunity is greater than a federal lawmaker being a law breaker,” Udofia stressed.

According to him, “the fact that the accident involved the official of another country portrait Nigeria in a very bad light, and, it still shows that Nigeria is a lawless society”

Ufofia posited that whatever effort the present government is doing to restore respectability to the citizenry is of no effect if the action of the Minority Senate Leader is allowed to go without question.
