Armed Robbers Attack Motorists Unhindered in Lagos Traffic

A gang of robbers numbering over 10 yesterday stormed the bridge linking Costain and Eko Bridge and dispossessed motorists stuck in traffic of their money and valuables.

Armed with pistols, knives and cutlasses, the gang held the helpless motorists stuck in traffic hostage for over 15 minutes and had a field day robbing them.

The robbers reportedly smashed the windows of motorists who had wound up their windows for fear of the rampaging gang.

Other motorists were said to have quietly handed over their valuables to the robbers to avoid having their cars vandalised.

According to eyewitness reports, the robbers finished their operation and left without hassle, as nobody challenged them, neither did the police arrive until they had left.

Such incidents have become the norm in that area and other places like Mile 2, Ijora and CMS Bridge along with other places with high records of traffic snarls.

Some motorists, who spoke to THISDAY, said despite repeated reports to the police about such flashpoints, nothing has been done to tame the rampaging robbers.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Joseph Offor, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the police responded to distress calls.

He however said details of the incident were sketchy, as the command received the information through a situation report.
