The Amaekpu Community in Abia State, were recently hosted to a free medical rhapsody, where they were treated by the officers of Nigeria Army Medical Corps attached to the 14 Brigade of the force located in Ohafia, Abia State.

Over 500 members of the community were treated of various ailments, including hypertension diabetes mellitus, refractive error and malaria and others under the Brigade’s medical outreach.

The medical outreach according to the brigade was organised to celebrate the Nigeria’s 55 years of nationhood which was marked on October 1, 2015.

A statement from the brigade said the gesture which was a directive from the Nigerian Army high command would continue until most residents of the area had been attended to.

The army spokesman, Major Sydney Mbaneme, said free drugs and other medical advices and logistics were provided for the residents of the community.

In the statement, Mbaneme quoted the Chief of Staff, Colonel Yakubu Hassan, who represented the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Anthony Omozoje, as saying that the outreach was prompted by the desire of the command to fulfill its social responsibility to the host community as well as to encourage civil military relations.

He said that medical advice were offered also to residents of the area, while persons with eye problems were attended to and reading glasses provided free of charge.

He said, “The gesture will continue for some time is a directive from the Army high command and part of series of programmes marked out by the Brigade to commemorate the 55th Nigerian Independence Anniversary."
