Despite Re-run Order, A’Ibom Gov Affirms Faith in the Judiciary
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has expressed confidence in the Nigerian judiciary in ensuring justice and fair play in the handling of electoral matters in the country; despite the fact that the Governor ship Election Petition Tribunal has ordered rerun elections in 18 out of 31 local government councils in the State
The Governor spoke weekend while addressing crowd of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faithful at the Globe Square, Wellington Bassey Way by Brooks street shortly on arrival from Abuja for the tribunal judgment.
Contrary to insinuations, Emmanuel was however silent while addressing his supporters on whether he is going to appeal the judgment or not.
The candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr. Umana Okon Umana had dragged Emmanuel of the PDP to the governorship election petition tribunal challenging the declaration of the latter (Emmanuel) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the duly elected governor in the April 11, 2015 governorship election in Akwa Ibom State.
Emmanuel while being received by his teeming supporters on Friday said the role of the judiciary was in line with the Nigerian Constitution that makes provision for the existence of multi-party system in the country. He said the rule of law duly interpreted by the judiciary would help democracy in the country to grow and meet the standard of other civilised democracies.
The Governor thanked the people of the state for the solidarity and reassured them of his implicit confidence in the judiciary for justice and equity, maintaining that democracy would be sweeter if the multi-party system is allowed to thrive in the constitution of the country.
