The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has revealed that the Boko Haram insurgents, in a desperate move, has resorted to concealing improvised explosive devices (IED) in attractive objects.

Its spokesman, Col. Rabi Abubakar, made this known in Abuja yesterday at an interactive session with journalists, where he called on the media to desist from publishing stories based on mere speculation without making inquiries form the military.

He also revealed that after the military released the list of 100 most wanted Boko Haram terrorists, five of them had been arrested at various locations in collaboration with other security agencies.

He said: “All these things we are doing is to make sure that the populace remains safe from Boko Haram terrorists who are now devising different means of fighting through IEDs and even some cluster bombs which they conceal in attractive objects and drop on the streets for people to pick up.

“We are using this platform to enlighten the citizens to make sure that they do not fall victim to things that can be avoided.”

Abubakar stated that while the media has being contributing immensely to the success of the war, he added that the media should try to confirm all information at their disposal before publishing stories.

“The more information you give to terrorist activities, the more they strive, the more they become prominent, the more they become dominant.

“So we are appealing that this is our country, and the security agencies are Nigerians who are working to serve the Nigerian people. Therefore, we are duty bound, as enshrined in the constitution, for citizens to contribute to the ongoing campaign against the insurgency,” Abubakar stressed.

The Defence spokesman also advised the public to desist from gathering at the scenes of bomb blasts.
