The New Sony Xperia Z5

- MICHAEL OKEKE Michael.okeke@thisdaylive.com

To stay ahead of the pack, smartphone manufactures introduce new phones to the consumer market on monthly bases. Some smartphone manufactures release more than two different smart devices in a month. The competition is very stiff, to stay in the smartphone business in no joke, it is not a walk in Bowling Green Park. The likes of Sony Electronics, Apple Inc to mention a few, might not be in the habit of launching new phones very month but once they release a product expect the best.

Sony is not in the business of flooding the market with products. The Japanese company likes to take its time and come up with just a few handsets each year. Sony’s flagship Xperia range of Smartphone’s has undergone a quick-fire evolution over the past year or two, with the Z2, Z3 and Z3+. It is a known fact that Sony makes great devices, it is no surprise that Sony has created a strong reputation in this regard. Sony’s flagship Xperia phones have been some of the best handsets of recent times, leading the way in terms of visuals, smart camera and great design features such as water resistance.

This year some might say that Sony has been relatively quiet. As the popular saying goes,“Anything worth doing, is worth doing right. Hunter S. Thompson”. In this week review, Sony Xperia Z5 is at the centre let us explore some incredible features of this intelligent device.

Design

As usual, Sony has gone for that perfect partnership of glass and metal. That curved aluminium edging looks great

and sleek. certain forms, certain shapes, cannot go out of fashion. And in that line of thought, the Sony Xperia Z5’s rectangular shape continues to stand the test of time. It is classy, very few are the handsets that dare go fully rectangular, and for that reason, the Xperia Z5’s shape continues to be recognizable, unique even. The proportions of the front are almost right, but the upper bezel is ever so slightly higher than the bottom one. And while that slight imperfection in the appearance may not prove to break the deal for most, the dangerously sharp edges of the Z5’s frame probably will. The back panel is now made of what Sony calls “frosted glass”. It’s basically glass with a matte finish to it, instead of the typical glossy one. It feels very similar to the glass trackpad of a MacBook. This unique design helps to distinguish the Xperia Z5 from earlier handsets. The Xperia Z5 has a 5.2” display, it is ideal for entertainment, capturing remarkable moments and other basic use. Sony Xperia Z5 is water- and dust-resistant (IP68), which means that entertainment can follow you in the bathroom or at places that may otherwise prove risky for your phone. Similarly to its predecessor, the Z5 has front-facing stereo speakers, which is good. One of the prominent features of Xperia Z5 is the fingerprint scanner, It’s impressive that Sony has managed to design such a skinny scanner and even more remarkable it works perfectly.

Camera Another key feature is the Sony Xperia Z5 23MP Camera. Sony makes good cameras, in fact, Sony cameras has been around for a long time. Sony has been using the same camera sensor for a while on its top end phones. This time there’s finally a change, the new 23MP sitting behind Sony’s customary G Lens .The main camera uses a 1/2.3-inch sensor with 23 megapixels (Sony Exmoor RS) and a wide-angle G Lens. The 23MP camera is one of the key selling points. It’s got a 0.03s autofocus, which means no matter the task or what you want to capture you will get a decent snap. The front camera takes pictures with 5 megapixels and has a 25 mm wide-angle lens, but there is no flash.Videos

can be recorded in Full HD.

Communication, Input and Storage The button design has changed. The power button is no longer exposed and round, but oval and sits in a slight depression. The latter is a result of the fingerprint reader implementation. The slots for the microSD and Nano-SIM cards are now hidden underneath one combined large cover on the left side. The previous magnetic docking port is omitted entirely and only the Micro-USB 2.0 port can be used for wired data transfers. The Wi-Fi module also supports very fast 802.11ac networks. The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact supports the most important wireless standards like quad-band GSM and UMTS as well as LTE Cat 6 with thirteen different frequencies. The integrated A-GPS module supports both GLONASS as well as the Chinese network BeiDou.

The touch screen is precise up into the peripheral areas and has a conveniently smooth surface. A glove mode is available as usual, the screen recognizes up to ten inputs simultaneously, and multi-touch gestures work perfectly. The fingerprint reader, on the other hand, works only after you have pushed the power buttons once. Just putting your finger on the sensor is not enough.

After that, however, it recognizes your fingers very quickly and reliably. The setup process for each finger is quick and you can store up to five fingerprints. Right now, it is only possible to unlock the smartphone with your finger. Sony could implement other functions via an update.

Internal storage is provided by a 32 GB flash module, which can be expanded by up to 200 GB via microSD-card. Applications can easily be transferred to the memory card and back. Compared to the predecessor Xperia Z3 Compact, the Z5 Compact is once again much faster, especially in terms of the sequential performance.

The Xperia Z3 Plus, the Sony Xperia Z5 is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core SoC 64-bit, running at 2 GHz. Graphics and display feature is excellent the graphics are an integrated Adreno 430 GPU. Both siblings Xperia Z5 Compact and Xperia Z5 Premium use this powerful processor as well, which is supported by 3 GB RAM.

Sony Xperia Z5 has a 5.2-inch FHD screen with 1920x1080 pixels.

This is a good one with a pixel density of 428 PPI, which does not differ from the predecessor Xperia Z3 Plus. The other competitors Apple iPhone 6S Plus and Huawei Mate S use this resolution as well, only the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ has a slightly higher resolution of 2560x1440 pixels.

Energy Consumption The power consumption of the Xperia Z5 is frugal. It is actually one of the most frugal devices while idling together with the Huawei Mate S.

The Sony Xperia Z5 has a 2900 mAh battery, only the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ (3000 mAh) has an even bigger module. The Apple iPhone 6S Plus and the Huawei Mate S are not far behind with 2750 and 2700 mAh, respectively.

Sony has created strong followers on its Xperia series of android smartphone.

The look and feel of this smart device are awesome. Sony Xperia Z5 is a masterpiece. In fact, the overall design and functions are largely on the success story of the previous Xperia Z phones. Some things do manage to stand out which are the selling point, waterresistance, 23MP intelligent Camera, Finger-Print Scanner and a powerful Quad-Core Processor. Sony’s Xperia Z5 custom Android User Interface feels nicely coherent and relatively straightforward. It is well-designed magnum opus
