Are the New Ministers Round Pegs in Round Holes?
Six months after being sworn-in in May, President Muhammadu Buhari has finally inaugurated his muchawaited ministers to complete his cabinet. While some people have hailed his choices as suitable for a change-minded government, others have derided his app
* A good look at the ministerial appointments made by Buhari shows that there are many round pegs in square holes, and few round pegs in round holes. But opinion may change with time as the new ministers apply and exert themselves to their duties. It is only when a dancer performs on the stage that he attracts more ovation. - Mr. Neville Kikpoye-Jonathan, President, Abua National Associates, Amalem- Abua, Rivers State
* Yes.
- Mr. Gboyega Adedotun, London, UK
* It depends, they could be round pegs in round holes, if they put determination to work, more so, being a collective assignment, assistance and intervention can come from any member of council. If only their aim is to give Nigerians the desired development which they have christened change. - Mr. Okechukwu Ikonne, Ogbor, Aboh Mbaise LGA, Imo State
* All we are after is good performance. In fact, the answer is yes; all those who have held positions among them are not questionable. All we need or they need from us is prayers that they may excel. -
Hon, Babale Maiungwa, U/Romi, Kaduna
* The new ministers are going to perform credibly. They came into power with new ideas, focus, orientation, and good policies that can fast-track change records. People should please encourage them. In case of any shortfall in any ministry, suggestions or advice notes should be sent in writing to address the ministers for purpose of correction. Ministers are round pegs in round holes, hungry to effect our desired change. - Mr. Obademi Joel Feyisayo, Student, National Open University of Nigeria, Apapa, Lagos
* Please give PMB time to settle down. Governance is not like what you thought. The man just came on board. - Mr. Oluwarotimi Solarin, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA * These are some of the best we can have at present. They may not be perfect but to some extent, they will deliver if given the enablement to work. When you work with PMB, you are condemned to deliver because he is a no-nonsense man and it’s either you shape up or ship out. GEJ also assembled a lot of good and experienced people in his cabinet but since he wasn’t disciplined enough to curb their corrupt ways of doing their jobs, he suffered it at last. People, particularly you journalists, should give them time to do the job. It’s going be hard, to be candid in the next two years but I foresee good tidings from this government afterwards and light at the end of the tunnel. Time is the antidote.
- Mr. David Olatunde, London, UK
* These public servants were carefully chosen to move our nation to the next level. It is up to them to prove their worth.
- Miss Nkeiruka Abanna, Lagos State
* The portfolios appear to be okay but I am not comfortable with the ministers of Interior and Defence coming from the same region and religion as the equally sensitive positions of the NSA, Director of DSS, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Air Staff. There should be greater care taken in this critical area to reflect our federal character. This government will succeed if it can improve on transparency and freedom of information not accountability.
- Mr. Buga Dunj, Jos, Plateau State * Don’t wait to see if they will fail but let’s join hand to support them as much as we can in prayers, loyalty to our nation, paying of taxes, not littering the street and stealing in our various offices etc and let’s see if there will not be a drastic change. - Mr. Gbenga Adeyefa-Ojomo, Sussex, United Kingdom
* Yes, the new ministers are honestly genuine quality or right leaders from diverse social economic, academic, ethnic, cultural, political e.t.c. backgrounds with honed careful selection by selfless wise sage gives Nigeria high hopes of a better future. It is a new dawn. The desired change is imminent. God bless PMB and Nigeria. - Miss Apeji Patience Eneyeme, Badagry, Lagos State
* Emphatically yes, without prejudice. The new ministers are perfect round pegs in round holes; a sharp deviation from the past where mainly career politicians were rewarded with ministerial appointments to the detriment of the nation. PMB has assembled a team with track records of outstanding performance and pedigree in line with the change mantra of the government. I have an unshakeable belief that the ministers will hit the ground running to drive the government’s policy concepts, formulation and implementation.
- Mr. Solomon Ogar, Abuja, F.C.T.
* Time will tell! Sometimes, human success is not well rated during their lifetime, it happens in their afterlife by those affected by their deeds. - Mr. Sonny Okobi, media practitioner Lagos State
* Despite agitations on the appointments of these ministers, the blame is mainly on our laws. A visit to our prisons will reveal no corrupt politician or official there, yet billions of dollars have been carted away. The president has directed they should go into action and must not fail. Nigerians are watching, even as it is early to pass comment. If any one of them is not performing, surely people will talk about it. That is democracy.
- Mr. Dogo Stephen, Kaduna * Ministers appointed by PMB are okay with their pedigree; they will deliver good governance which Nigerians expect from them where others failed. They need our prayers to succeed for betterment of Nigerians. - Mr. Gordon Chika Nnorom, Public Commentator, Umukabia, Abia State
* Yes, of course they are. Carefully sourced, screened, tested and trusted i.e. going by their dazzling track records. Without undue interference, I honestly believe they are all aptly good to go. Fashola, Amaechi, Ogbe, Kachikwu are all legends. We must also watch those mopping up our waste irons for recycling so that such waste materials won’t end up in the filthy hands of Boko Haram for the manufacture of lethal explosives. God bless Nigeria.
- Mr. Apeji Onesi, Lagos State
