- Martins Ifijeh

As part of efforts to ensure quality and safety of consumer products in the country, the Institute of Public Analyst of Nigeria (IPAN) has called on its members to take quality of laboratory analysis seriously, as the safety and health of the nation depends on it. Stating this at the 22nd training workshop of the institute in Lagos, recently, its President, Dr. Dahiru Adamu said, in a bid to making sure its members conform to international standard in laboratory analysis, said the institute would continue its mandatory continuing education for its members.

“This training is to acquaint members with the provisions of ISO/IEC 17025 and 15189, with the aim of attaining highest standard in laboratory analysis business in the country.

“The idea is that, once we have laboratories that can conform to international standard 17025, Nigerians can then sleep with their two eyes closed, because whatever we produce in this country, once it is analysed and it meets the required standard, then the matter of low quality would have been tackled effectively,” he added.

He noted that the quality of laboratories was a function of equipments, personnel and methods, adding that, this goes a long way in determining the output of results analysed, as well as the way customers will view such laboratories.

Also lending his voice, the President, Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, Mr. Toyosi Raheem, said the institute must continuously live to its name at all times, especially asimporters of unhealthy products continue to threaten the health of Nigerians. “Recently, we heard some drinks, called Gallant Bitters were brought into the country, and it was killing Nigerians. This shows we must be up and doing at all times, otherwise, people will start dying,” he added.
