NEMA Cautions on Fire Outbreak During Harmattan

The National Emergency Management Agency has alerted members of the public of the need to be safety conscious, especially at this period of harmattan so as to avoid incessant fire outbreaks in the country.

The Director-General of the agency, Muhammad Sani Sidi who decried the incessant fire incidents resulting in lost of lives, destructio­n of properties, said the rampant cases of fire outbreak if the people across the country imbibe the safety code.

In a statement signed by a Senior Informatio­n Officer with the agency, Mr. Sani Datti , the Director General of NEMA sympathize­d with victims of the unfortunat­e incidents and called on the state government­s and people to observe national fire safety code to prevent the reoccurren­ces.

He stressed the importance of everyone being aware of the safety tiprd in respect of fire outbreaks.

“It has been observed over the years that the incidence of fire and its intensity of damage and losses are exacerbate­d by the Harmattan season and public should be safety conscious," he said.

San-Sidi said as part of disaster management, the agency would do everything possible including stepping up efforts to reduce fire outbreaks in the country. He advised that all private and public places should have basic fire fighting equipment and always adheres to safety rules in order to prevent fire disaster.

In recent times, there were reported cases of fire outbreak in Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna, Gashua, Ibadan, Warri, Minna, Yola, Jos, Ado Ekiti, Lagos, and Gas explosion in Port Harcourt and Nnewi, Anambra state.
