Ambode Laments Influx of Illegal Immigrants into Lagos

- Gboyega Akinsanmi

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has decried the influx of immigrants from neighbouring countries, requesting the federal government to reverse the trend while citing its consequences for the security of the state.

The governor asked the federal government to honour an agreement on the relocation of Ikoyi Prison, noting that the state government was willing to provide land for construction of a modern prison.

Ambode’s concerns were contained in a statement issued after a meeting with Minister of Interior, Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau at Lagos House, Alausa. Dambazau attended the meeting with ComptrollerGeneral, Nigeria Immigration Service, Mr. Martins Abeshi; Comptroller-General of Federal Prisons, Dr. Peter Ekpendu; Comptroller-General, Federal Fire Service, Mr. Joseph Anebi, and Commandant-General of Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu among others.

At the meeting, Ambode pointed the attention of the minister to the unacceptable trend of illegal immigrants in different parts of the state, asking the federal government to work out strategies to reduce their population.

He explained that there was a need for the Federal Fire Service “to collaborate with the State Fire Service to jointly combat fire disasters. There is a strong need to revisit the agreement on the relocation of Ikoyi Prison.”

He promised the state government was willing “to provide land for construction of a modern structure for the prison. The partnership between the federal and state government is more about development of our country because Lagos mirrors Nigeria.”
