Barely three weeks after the death of Mrs. Funmilayo Adebayo, wife of millionaire businessman, Aare Femi Adebayo, at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, two Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Akin Olujinmi and Rotimi Akeredolu have again demanded the release of the postmortem within the next seven days.

Funmilayo, aged 58, had on Monday January 25 drove to UCH in company of her maid, Odunayo, to follow up on her medical check up which she had commenced a week earlier through series of medical tests in the teaching hospital to ward off any untoward ailment.

Her husband, Aare Adebayo told journalists that, “a week before the incident and unfortunate death of my wife, she had approached me that she wanted to go for comprehensive medical check up and test. Why because we lost her immediate sister last year July, 2015 to cancer. Her name is Mrs. Toluwalase Akinola. Because of that, she was of the opinion that since the two of them were from the same parent she should take care of herself and avoid the mistake made by her sister. And she told me that she wanted to run a comprehensive test which I did not object.

“And she started that test and the last test was supposed to be Monday (July 25) because she had initially gone for heart, colon test and others and they were all okay. She came back home and told me she needed to go for the last test which was the said fateful Monday. I told her I have to go to Abuja but unfortunately my Abuja meeting was postponed. So, on a preceding Saturday, she started using what they gave to her to be using, it is a liquid substance like bottle water but it wasn’t bottle water. On Monday, she completed the drug and told me she was going to UCH and I said ok, bye.

“I was somewhere holding a meeting in Ibadan and my maid, Odunayo, who came with her to the hospital informed me on phone that her madam was not feeling fine in the hospital. I was disturbed because of the simple fact that what could have happened to somebody who drove herself to the hospital to meet up her 9a.m. appointment?

“She said: ‘sir, mummy is going through some kind of problems. The pain is too much sir.’ I was worried and I said I am on my way. I left the meeting but to my surprise, when I got to where she was running the test I overheard her telling them (doctors) that she was no longer interested in the test and that they should normalise her system and allow her to go home. I couldn’t go in. I stayed outside but was hearing them. She was seriously in pain and told them to allow her to go. The doctor met me by the door and said who are you sir, I introduced myself and asked what was happening to my wife?

“He replied and said she was feeling some kinds of pain and I asked why and he said ‘ehmm when we put gas into her we discovered that she had pain” and I said you should have stopped the gas. All what you need to do is to stop it. We were with them till around 2a.m., the following day (Tuesday). We went for X-ray to see what went wrong.

After that they said they had to take her for surgery because the lungs or intestine was not okay and I said the lungs or the intestine that were okay before the test began, how come you were saying she had perforated intestine? At that level I suspected that maybe the gas was too much and the intestine has been damaged in the process.

“Funny enough, another doctor came in and said she would need operation and the first thing he asked me was that ‘do you have the money? Because if you don’t have the money we can’t take her to the theater. And I said how much is the cost and he said around N110,000. And I said no problem for as long as my wife will be brought back to normal, I don’t mind and I said I will pay after all I have spent well over N100,000 within the afternoon time I arrived the hospital.”
