2016 NPA Lagos Intl’ Polo Tournament Enters Second Stage
The second stage of the 2016 NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament will begin today at the famous Ribadu Road in Ikoyi with three matches in the Low Cup.
However, Polo buffs will be looking forward to the prestigious Majekodunmi Cup which is the most-lucrative trophy in Nigerian sports, as it worth N25m for the winners.
An exciting first stage of the high-class tournament came to a close on Sunday with Lagos Shoreline emerging the biggest winner by clinching the Open Cup at the expense of Lagos Caverton while Lagos dominance of the first stage was highlighted by Sao Polo’ win of the Dansa Cup against STL in an all-Lagos final.
The Kola Karim-led Shoreline also added the Oba of Lagos Cup which they won by beating Lagos Ashbert in the semifinal but they are in for a tougher challenge as few other teams are ready to knock them off the perch as they vie for the Low Cup. They will be competing as Goodfellows/ Shoreline with Thomas Ussher +4, and Tobi Edun +2 teaming up with Kola 0 and Tunde Karim +1 in the team.
Other teams that will battle for the Low Cup are Rojo, Samsung Rifugio, Smooth FM Polo, Agrovote, Zippy, Agad, MUK/Garages (all from Lagos) while Kano Siemens, Kano Agro Text, Ibadan Eleyele and Ibadan Oluyole will compete as the away teams.
The Majekodunmi Cup, will see the creme-de -la creme players rumble as four teams go for glory.
Lagos team, Trojan/Ironclad which will have Obafemi Otudeko +1, Kunle Tinubu +2, Frankie Menendez +7 and another +7 player will confront Kano Titans (Halifax Ibrahim +2, Taju Dantata +2, Mariano Uranga +6 and a +7 player to get the Majekodunmi Cup underway on Wednesday while on Thursday it will be the turn of Kaduna-based Fifth Chukker/Access Bank (Adamu Atta +3, and three other players with handicap 0, +7 and +8) against Kano Keffi Pony’s (Ahmed Wadada 0, Babangida Hassan +3, Diego Whyte +6 and Santiago Marambio +6).
The tournament has GTBank and MTN as major sponsors while the cup sponsors are Union Bank, Chapel Hill Denham, IHS, Arbico and Dansa.
