Arsenal Golf Club Hosts Nigeria’s First Four Club Caddies Competition

- Olawale Ajimotokan in Abuja

Arsenal Golf Club, Obinze, Owerri, at the weekend hosted Nigeria’s inaugural Four-club Caddies Competition.

The tournament, which featured 60 caddies, drawn from different clubs across Nigeria, was organised by the West Africa Golf Tour Academy.

Imo State Deputy Government, Prince Eze Madumere, performed the ceremonial tee off.

The competition was a highly demanding mental test that placed tough risk and reward decision-making on the fledging golfers.

For the 18-hole event, the players’ choices were limited to only four clubs in their bags as against the conventional rule which permitted a golfer to stock 14 clubs in the golf bag.

The tournament put together to uncover young talents, also intended to provide the pathway for talented caddies, who eventually will aspire to become professional golf players.

In view of the pressure of club selection placed on the players, many of them had to think about which irons, wedges and woods were to be picked along the mandatory putter.

Many caddies whose ages ranged from between 12 to 25, participated at the competition which the organisers said will now be held twice every month.

The West Africa Golf Tour Academy was opened two weeks ago at Arsenal Golf Club with the objective of developing the game of golf in Nigeria.

The Tour also dedicated a driving range in the Academy for public use. The range will support the growth of the game by allowing youths and other starters to learn and hone their golfing skills.

The competition was covered by SuperSport, the official broadcast partner of the West Africa Golf Tour.
