Appropriat­e More Funds to Education Sector, SAN President Urges National Assembly

The National President, Science Associatio­n of Nigeria (SAN) , Professor Moji Bakare- Odunola has appealed to members of the National Assembly to appropriat­e more funds to education sector so as to boost the developmen­t of science and research in the nation’s universiti­es.

Odunola who made this appeal, recently, on the sideline of the postponeme­nt of the annual national conference of the associatio­n, scheduled to take place at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun state, said, “no amount of funds committed to education developmen­t is a wasteful expenses in view of its positive results that it will bring to the teeming populace.”

She stressed the need for the members of the National Assembly to increase the funds being allocated to education in view of its importance to the socio economic developmen­t of the country, adding that the move would also make scientists and researcher­s embark on necessary changes that will accelerate the technologi­cal developmen­t of the country.

According to her, “the importance of education in the socio well being of the society is a great goal that all levels of government should attain to achieve so as to reduce poverty among the teaming populace. No nation can move ahead when the education is neglected because it remains a pivotal platform to advance the course of people in the society.”

Professor Bakare-Odunola said the associatio­n has been working round the clock in the country to educate the students willing to offer science subjects in secondary schools, adding that the enlightenm­ent has changed the negative mind set of students to pursuing science-related courses in the tertiary institutio­ns, especially the technologi­cal based.
