- James Emejo in Abuja

The leadership of the National Assembly has commended Bajaj Auto, India for its faith and confidence in the Nigerian economy, leading to further investment drive by the firm.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu said the company had contributed significantly in addressing the problem of unemployment among the teeming youth population.

Speaking over recently in Abuja at the launch of the Maxima Cargo, Bajaj’s three-wheeler cargo vehicle for last mile transportation particularly in the agricultural sector, Ekweremadu stated that the company had proven to be a strategic partner of government towards solving unemployment.

He said the launch of the cargo assets could ignite a series of manufacturing activities along the value chain and boost the economic power of Nigerians.

The lawmaker said government would continue to encour- age Bajaj and other companies whose investment strategies align with government’s policy to boost job creation, adding that the legislature will provide enabling environment for foreign investors to thrive. He promised that the National Assembly will continue to make laws that will further improve the ease of doing business in the country. Ekweremadu said the country was determined to make progress in spite of current challenges. Also, speaking at the occasion, the Governor of Benue State, Mr. Samuel Ortom said the new cargo shuttles including ambulances will boost the country’s auto industry and add value to economic development by providing gainful employment to youths at these trying times.

He said while the vehicles will facilitate the development of agriculture and add value to agriculture and health services, it would bring revolution to cargo transportation in the rural areas. Noting that the vehicles will be of immense advantage to the people of Benue State who are largely farmers, the governor stressed the need to diversify the economy from oil, which is fast losing its relevance. Nevertheless, Senior Vice President, Africa, Bajaj Auto, Mr. K.S. Grihapathy said the Maxima Cargo will usher a new solution in cargo transportation that is cleaner, safer and more comfortable.

He said: “We feel that this vehicle will be an effective solution in the last mile cargo space in Nigeria which currently is beset by problems like congestion, traffic and pollution.
