TOKUNBO AFIKUYOMI STAGES A COMEBACK

-

Times there were when he was one of the powerful men in power in the political circle. His profile rose to the envy of some when he became a senator on the platform of the then Alliance for Democracy, AD.

While he was at the National Assembly, he was, at different times, appointed to various committees. Indeed, he also enjoyed a robust relationship with the then President of the Senate, Alloysus Wabara.

However, his political tale changed in 2007 when he aspired to be governor of Lagos State. His friend and political boss, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was then a former governor of Lagos State, was said to have anointed his then Chief of Staff, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN.

All entreaties to make him forego his political ambition fell on deaf ears. Determined to actualise his dream, he dumped the AD and pitched his tent with the defunct All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP). It was a wrong political step, which he later paid dearly for. His ambition to be the number one citizen in Lagos never materialised.

Today, he is said to have realised his folly and retraced his steps. Therefore, having eaten the humble pie, he has now been‘ admitted’ into the APC fold. It was gathered that he would be contesting a senatorial seat to represent Lagos West Senatorial District under the APC, in 2019.

Though he had previously rep- resented the constituency, sources revealed that he might not get the ticket on a silver platter. The reason, according to a reliable source, is that “the Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, may be vying for the same position from the same constituency when his tenure expires in Osun.”
