Police Arrest Gang Member for Raping Lady

- Rebecca Ejifoma

The police in Lagos State have arrested a gang member, Ayo Salau Yusuf, for luring a lady (names withheld), through Facebook, then robbing and gang raping her.

According to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, sometime in July 2018, the victim became friends with one Richard Samuel Gbenga on Facebook but unknown to her, Yusuf is a rapist and an armed robber.

According to the police spokesman, they interacted a couple of times, getting to know each other. However, on August 4 this year, the said Gbenga invited his victim for a dinner, which she accepted.

She further told him where they would meet before taking off for the dinner.

Oti said: “The suspect, Gbenga, arrived at the agreed take off point in a Toyota Camry saloon car with registration number JJJ 406 DL driven by one Ayo Salau, a member of his robbery gang.”

The PRO continued further that on their way to Lekki, they pulled over at a lonely spot.

Armed with cutlasses, they ordered her to take off her clothes or be killed. Afterwards, they took turns to rape her then robbed her of her wristwatch and cash.

“The moment the hoodlums left, the victim raised the alarm and gave a description of their car. Police operatives attached to Maroko Division were alerted and immediately they laid ambush for the fleeing criminals,” he added.

As soon as the police operatives stopped their vehicle, the criminals were said to have taken to their heels. The officers chased them and arrested Salau while his partner in crime, Gbenga, escaped.

With the swift arrest, the victim was able to identify the suspect who confessed to have committed the crime. He added that his fleeing partner recruited him for the job. The Commissioner of Police Lagos State, Edgal Imohimi, therefore, cautioned the youths especially young women to beware of people who may use the social media to take advantage of them. “The long arm of the law will surely catch up with the fleeing suspect,” he assured.
