Increasing Women Participation in Corporate Organisations
Women are already actively participating in corporate governance. It just that in this part of the world, it didn’t start early, so it is a gradual process, they will surely hit the zenith. The earlier hiccups were culture, views about female education, poverty and self-inflicted curse from the women folks for perpetually wanting to hid under men. As time goes on, they will get there.
Sunday Okobi, Lagos.
Increase education for girls including in the rural areas. Let roles or ranks at the local government level be made for women. At every level of government and legislature quota systems should be introduced to cater for women involvement. Also, continuous campaigns, sensitisation and workshops especially at local levels should be commonplace.
Ernest Nwabueze, Ota, Ogun State.
I think more women should be employed. Women who are qualified academically. Regards of their marital status, nursery school be built as well within the confines of every company to help nursing mother work as well as take care of their babies.
Chinyere Okoroafor, Lagos.
Women must first see themselves as rightful owners of spaces they occupy in the universe. When reaching one’s apogee in life becomes a privilege rather than a right, the culture of servitude sets in. So, women must change their mentality as it will drive them to do the impossible especially those things that are tied to certain unpalatable culture. I am always opposed to giving women certain percentages because it tells a different story of patriarchalism rather than the fairness our society intents to justify. Man or woman, we should be given the same latitude to excel. A certain percentage as it affects political calculations inhibits their freedom. Ultimately, the bulk of the job rests on the shoulders of our women.
All over the world, freedom isn’t given but taken. What should be done to increase women participation in corporate governance? What have the men been doing differently? Women should do what the men have been doing. That’s all.
Sunday Abire, Akure, Ondo State.
I said to promote women involvement in corporate governance, we must first of all, deal with the root. And that is the behavioral perception of “women must be seen and not heard”
When a woman is highly ambitious, the society frowns at it. And that’s when you hear, she’s too ambitious. She is only going to end up in a man’s house. So how do we deal with this menace, by making the process easier of our women?
Esther Adeyanju, Lagos.
Looking at our society now, I think women are evolving and doing much better in their respective fields and even in the society at large. This is quite impressive unlike five years back. Nevertheless, based on my opinions I feel women can still do better than this I’m the society by fostering unity, oneness and peace amongst other women in the Society. Also, the myopic mentality that sees women as incapable to handle some leadership positions especially in politics should be totally eradicated because that mindset is majorly the cause of women being neglected in some sensitive leadership positions.
Joy Ushie, Ekiti.
The Africa governments should promote gender equality between men and women. Abolish most of Africa traditions that restrict women in many areas. The government should raise societal awareness of women leadership. Build capacity of female leaders. Government should close the gaps in productivity and earnings between male and female.
