Saraki’s Magnanimity Amidst Political Travails

-

He made a choice, which he considered the best for him in the circumstance, and he pursued it with all his God-given resources.

He is not one who would ever entomb his dream, so put up a good fight. He suffered attacks from all imaginable quarters, yet he held on to his conviction.

Those who believed in him egged him on and invested their time , energies and resources in him.

But fate, the ultimate decider, had its way. So, last week, Dr. Bukola Saraki, stepped down as the Senate President of the 8th National Assembly, after a lot of heightened political drama.

His reign, however, it may be described, has somehow added another interesting chapter to the annals of the nation’s fledgling democracy.

Regardless of his travails, the former governor of Kwara State is recognised for blazing a trail in the political circle, particularly as it concerned successful execution of major laws in the upper chamber of the National Assembly.

Though he lost the bid to return to the senate in the March, 2019 election, the 56 years old political gladiator has shown an uncommon spirit of sportsmanship by not turning his back against his people; evidence that he eschews politics with bitterness.

He has also shown that you don’t need to be in power before you impact your society positively. This was evidenced when he announced the donation of his severance allowance to Leah Sharibu and some other families who are victims of the insurgency in the North-East geopolitical zone.

The initiative was widely commended by members of the public as well as the media.

He came into our consciousness after he was appointed an aide to former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He would later dazzle many when he was governor of Kwara State and later Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF), Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF),

As chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, his tenure was eventful and he was well-loved by his colleagues .

When he first won a seat in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, he was appointed as the Chairman, Senate Committee on Environment and Ecology and was also a member of the Senate Committees on Capital Markets and Finance.
