Robbers Kill Two in Ondo Bank Robbery

Two people were killed and two others injured yesterday when armed robbers struck at Iju, Ondo State branch of a bank and carted away unspecifie­d amount of money.

The bank located on Akure- Adoekiti Road was located about one kilometre to the Iju Divisional Police Headquarte­rs in Akure North Local Government Area (LGA).

A source in the town said the robbers arrived the town from the Ado Ekiti end of the road around 2.p.m. and operated for about 30 minutes.

The source added that the robbers announced their arrival in the town with sporadic gunshots.

The robbers were said to have gained entrance into the banking hall after they shattered the bank security door with dynamite.

One of the injured persons was said to be a banker while the other person was a customer just as the two others killed were said to be a woman bank official and another staff.

The incident was said to have sent panic to the community as residents trooped to the bank area after the robbers had left.

It was gathered that the robbers escaped from the scene of the action in vehicle allegedly belonging to a customer, which they used to cart away money in three Ghana- Must- Go bags.

The robbers were said to have abandoned the vehicle few meters from the robbery scene and fled.

The incident led to the hurried closure of banking business in Akure and environs.

When THISDAY got to the scene of the incident, residents were seen around discussing the matter in low tones while men of the Nigeria Police took positions watching.

The attacked bank is the only one in the agrarian community.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident, adding the one bank official was killed.

He said the robbers abandoned their vehicle while police were already working to ensure the arrest of the robbers.

Joseph said men of the command have started combing the bushes around the area, and gave the assurance that they would be arrested.
