Impeachment: I Did Nothing Wrong, Says Trump
President Donald Trump on Wednesday insisted he had done “nothing wrong” ahead of a vote in the House of Representatives where he faces becoming the third US leader ever to be impeached.
The debates on the two articles of impeachment were still being debated in the as at press time last night in the House where Democrats have majority.
Speaker of the Democraticled House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi had announced on Tuesday that the body will vote on impeaching Trump over allegations he attempted to force Ukraine into investigating a main 2020 reelection rival, Joe Biden.
He is also accused of obstructing Congress by refusing to cooperate with the impeachment investigation, barring staff from testifying and holding back documentary evidence.
Trump denies any wrongdoing. Republicans say today’s vote is the culmination of an effort to kick him out of office which began on the day that he was elected.
The case would be sent to the Senate, where a trial of Trump is expected to open in January, and his acquittal is equally expected, given the Republicans’ control there.
However, the president said on Twitter yesterday, “Can you believe that I will be impeached today by the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats, And I Did Nothing Wrong! A terrible thing.”
“This should never happen to another President again. Say a PRAYER!” Trump wrote.
On Tuesday, Trump sent Pelosi an angry six-page letter, in which he told the House speaker that “history will judge you harshly,” while accusing her of “declaring open war on American Democracy.
Meanwhile, taking to his verified Twitter handle @ POTUS on Wednesday, Trump called for intercessory prayers as the House continues the debates over his impeachment.
He said no American president should be subjected to a harrowing experience such as impeachment.
He had tweeted: “Can you believe that I will be impeached today by the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats, And I Did Nothing Wrong! A terrible Thing. Read the Transcripts. This should never happen to another President again. Say a Prayer!
Earlier, the embattled president had tweeted a statement by lawmaker Doug Collins, who had reportedly said, “They just wanted to get at the President. They had no intention of having a proper investigation.
“They couldn’t find any crimes, so they did a vague abuse of power and abuse of Congress, which every administration from the beginning has done.”
The president’s tweets have since gathered various responses from his teeming 27.3 million Twitter followers.
