FGC Warri Old Students Donate to Alma Mater
The Federal Government College Warri (FGCW) students’ sets of 1988 and 1999 have given back to their alma mater by renovating a set of classrooms and rewarding the school’s best performing student. The presentation of the donations were made during the sets’ 2019 reunion ceremony in Warri, Delta State. The FGCW 1988 and 1999 old students pledged to bankroll the best performing senior student’s WAEC enrolment and purchase of JAMB form. Receiving the award at FGC in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, a teacher, Pastor Apiepie O. Kingsley, thanked the old students for giving back to their alma mater.
Presenting the awards, the Class 1988 President, Mr. Alex Akpootu Obieruwou, said the award, renovation of classrooms and donation of desks and chairs were part of their efforts to give back to the school that groomed.
He said, ‘’I take great pride in being an alumnus of this great school, FGC Warri. So also are my classmates on behalf of whom we stand before you. I urge the alumnus to leverage on the power of our coming together/networking to improve our individual wellbeing, give back to the school and contribute to the task of nation-building.
“About three decades ago we studied in this citadel of learning where you currently are studying. Over these years, we have become successful parents, professionals, business men. If we did, then you too can and even better.”
Obieruwou urged the students to stay focused, determined and disciplined.
He added, “It is, therefore, true that through determination, self-focus and discipline you can accomplish anything. Failure will not overtake you if determination to succeed is strong enough. Your current challenges are only but temporal and should server as a catalyst to pursue your lofty dreams.”
He appealed to the students to shun vices common to teenagers such as cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractices, obscene dressing, sexual promiscuity, internet crimes that teenagers engage in today.
Mr Temidayo Falore of Class 1999, who also awarded senior students with highest results with N50,000each and junior students with highest results with 25,000 each said he was impressed with the academic performance of the students when they called them out.
The legal adviser of the association, Mr Humphrey Omede, HSC set 1986-1988, in his contribution noted, “We feel real great being here today. The place we used to be 33 years ago, now finding ourselves back again (there).
“The interesting part of it is this interaction with the present students and some of the students who came in 10, 15 years after we had left the school.”
