Power Outage Mars Celebration of 2020 Commonwealth Day
The celebration of the 2020 Commonwealth Day in Nigeria was stalled as a result of power outage at the Ministry of Education.
The celebration was greeted with poor planning as key members of the diplomatic community with heads of agencies of the Federal Ministry of Education and students from over 10 schools were kept in the dark for hours.
Among the dignitaries present were British High Commissioner, Richard Moon, and others.
Investigations revealed that the challenge was due to the difficulty faced by the organisers to power a generating set.
Diplomats and permanent secretaries of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the celebrating ministry, as well as staff and students of various schools left the venue of the event abruptly.
The highlights of the 2020 celebration with the theme: “Delivering a common future: connecting, innovating, transforming,” included a parade of the Commonwealth flags, presentation of theme songs, poetry recitation, drama presentation, cultural dance, and exhibition.
The ministry had organised youth lecture and school’s quiz competition in which students were tested in English, Mathematics, Sciences, Current Affairs and issues around Commonwealth.
