NCC: We Have Not Renewed Airtel’s Operating Licence

- Emmanuel Okonji

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said the operating licence of Airtel Nigeria was still undergoing the process of renewal.

The Commission, in a statement by its Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, noted that unless the process had been completed, it would be premature to say the licence had been renewed.

It debunked a publication credited to the Managing Director/Chief Executive Office of Airtel Nigeria, Mr. Olusegun Ogunsanya, to the effect that the mobile operating license of Airtel has been renewed by the Commission for another period of 10 years.

Ogunsanya reportedly made the statement while speaking in Lagos on last Wednesday during the media launch of Airtel’s corporate social responsibility programme ‘Touching Lives 6’.

“The Commission wishes to state that while Airtel Nigeria has applied for the renewal of the

Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) granted to it by the Commission, the application is yet to be approved as it is still undergoing required regulatory process”, the NCC stressed.

He added the clarification was “issued for the guidance of our stakeholders.”
