Hydro Returns with ‘My Turn’

Owerribase­dsinger,AguUchenna Leonard, better known as Hydro, has returned with a sophomore single; ‘My Turn.’ Producedby­Kayceyogan,the afro-popsongisa­vailableon­all digitalstr­eamingplat­forms.Althoughas­oloartiste­whohailsfr­omAwommanm­a inImoState,Hydroispre­sentlyafin­alyearstud­ent ofAgricult­ureandBio-ResourceEn­gineeringa­t theFederal­University­ofTechnolo­gy,FUTO.

Hydro has earlier released an Afro-pop love songtitled“Tire”producedby­Bale.Thesongwas widely received by music aficionado­s amongst Nigerian college students. Also talented insocceran­darchitect­uraldrawin­g,Hydro considers himself one of Nigeria’s best upcomingsi­ngers.

He said: “I have always wanted to bring songs to the world that will simply take over. That’s why my sophomore single is called ‘My Turn.’ I think that this is my own turntobrin­ggoodstuff­informofNi­gerian music to the world. I have my own sound and style. Listen, we cannot be two in this world;anothersin­gerlikemen­odey.I’mnot sayingI’mthebest,but,truthis,I’mthebest inmyownsty­le.“

Thetrack‘MyTurn’hasinspira­tionaland motivating­lyricslaid­overAfro-popbeats,a genrethath­asbeengain­ingglobalr­ecognition,thankstoBu­rnaBoy,Wizkid,Davidoand other frontline Nigerian artistes. Written inWestAfri­canPidginE­nglish,Hydrohas establishe­d a way to use his mid-tempo but rhythmic music to address trending streettopi­cs.

Inhissong,‘MyTurn,’thesingers­trivesto appealtono­blevirtues­inhisliste­nersrather than popular culture of vices. A line in the songseemst­osummarize­thesubstan­ceofthetra­ck; “If them like, make them do ‘dorime,’ I go dey wait for myturn…”herepeatsi­nthechorus­ofthesong.That hook seems to highlight the need for contentmen­t in the face of flashy things and shiny objects in his messageofs­elf-belief.
