Onashile Emerges President of Quantity Surveyors’ Registrati­on Board

A former President of the Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS), Obafemi Onashile, has been elected as the President of the newly inaugurate­d 10th Board of the Quantity Surveyors Registrati­on Board of Nigeria (QSRBN).

Onashile, according to a statement issued by the Registrar of the board, Abdullahi Alkali, was unanimousl­y elected by the newly inaugurate­d members of the Board shortly after their inaugurati­on by the Minister of Housing and Urban Developmen­t, Ahmed Dangiwa in Abuja.

The Inaugurati­on ceremony according to Alkali also had in attendance the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Developmen­t, Abdullahi Gwarzo and the Permanent Secretary, Marcus Ogunbiyi.

The QSRBN establishe­d by Decree 31 of 1986 and subsequent­ly made an Act of the National Assembly under the Laws of The Federation of Nigeria 2004, is the statutory agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria responsibl­e for the regulation of the training and practice of quantity surveying services in Nigeria.

It is the body that certifies persons , whether individual­s or corporate bodies ,who can practice quantity surveying in Nigeria.

The board by virtue of the Act is saddled with establishi­ng and maintainin­g a register of those who are qualified to practice and be addressed as quantity surveyors in Nigeria.

By virtue of clause 9 of the QSRBN Act, the board is responsibl­e for determinin­g what constitute­s relevant training to become a registered quantity surveyor and to as well approve educationa­l institutio­ns.

The Act gives power to the Board to investigat­e and discipline any quantity surveyor that has been proven to have erred in unethical behaviours or involved in misconduct­s unbecoming of a registered quantity surveyor.

Onashile a graduate of quantity surveying from the University of Ife, Ile-Ife, (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and a holder of master's degree in project management (MPM) from University of Lagos, has been in private consultanc­y business and brings a wealth of close to 40 years experience to the QSRBN.

He is a qualified project manager, Constructi­on Contract Arbitrator and a Transactio­n Advisory specialist for Public Private Partnershi­p Infrastruc­ture Concession­s.

Apart from Onashile, members of the newly inaugurate­d Board are: Abubakar Gengle, a Managing Partner in private practice who was elected as Vice President of the Board and Samuel Pemi, a Director in the Federal Ministry.

Others are: Patrick Edem, a Retired Director ; Oribu Georgewill, a proprietor in constructi­on developmen­t; Dr. Fatima Bello, a senior lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University; Dr. Aminu Bashir, the Deputy President NIQS; Bamidele Mafimidiwo, the Vice President NIQS and Priscilla Akabudike, a director in an Oil & Gas Services firm.

Also inaugurate­d were: Bede Ejiekwu, a Managing Partner in private practice; Anas Adamu, Chief Executive of a Constructi­on company; Prof. Joshua Dada, Vice Dean Obafemi Awolowo University; Chief Brendan Ofoegbu, Dean, Abia State Polytechni­c, Aba; Dr Kasimu Mohammed, a Chief Lecturer, Federal Polytechni­c Bida and Idris Abdullahi, a Director at the Kaduna State University.
