Zakzaky: Court fixes judgement for Sept 29

- Maryam Ahmadu-Suka, Kaduna

AHigh Court in Kaduna State has fixed September 29 as the date to deliver judgment on the motion put forward by the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, seeking the dismissal of the case against him by the state government over its failure to produce evidence.

This came after the counsel to Sheikh Zakzaky defended the motion and the government’s counsel made a counter motion when the court sat yesterday.

One of Sheikh Zakzaky’s lawyers, Abubakar Marshal, asked the court to dismiss the charges because they were devoid of any merit and would not stand before any court of law.

He said the charges were also an abuse of court process. He noted that the Sheikh was charged with abetting commission of various offences saying,

“Those charged with committing those offences have been discharged and acquitted by the Kaduna State High Court and as such abetment cannot stand.”

Vehicular movement was interrupted in the state capital while the matter went on as security operatives blocked all exits leading to the court.
