Can rugs be cat­e­gorised as art pieces? Rugs most def­i­nitely can be, es­pe­cially the cre­ations by The Rug Com­pany. Spe­cial­is­ing in unique and exquisitely de­signed hand­made rugs, The Rug Com­pany was cre­ated in 1997 by Christo­pher and Suzanne Sharp in Lon­don. The idea stemmed from a pas­sion for qual­ity, de­sign, crafts­man­ship and ser­vice, cre­den­tials which have en­abled it to trans­form an in­dus­try and es­tab­lish The Rug Com­pany as one of the lead­ing names for hand­made con­tem­po­rary rugs.

The unique­ness of The Rug Com­pany lies in its ded­i­ca­tion to in­no­va­tive and orig­i­nal de­sign, while main­tain­ing the ex­cep­tional qual­ity achiev­able only by us­ing the best tra­di­tional rug­mak­ing skills. Each rug is made by hand by highly skilled ar­ti­sans us­ing the finest nat­u­ral yarns; each rug is a pre­cious and unique work of art.

The in­stant suc­cess of the Lon­don flag­ship show­room quickly led to ex­pan­sion in the US, as The Rug Com­pany opened its first show­room in New York’s Soho in 2002, fol­lowed by Los An­ge­les in 2005, Mi­ami in 2008, Chicago in 2010, Dal­las in 2011 and a sec­ond show­room in New York in 2012. The com­pany opened their Mid­dle East out­let with a flag­ship store in Dubai’s Al Serkal Av­enue. There are now 24 The Rug Com­pany show­rooms world­wide, in­clud­ing the re­cently opened show­room in Mu­nich and The Rug Com­pany’s 4,500 sq ft con­ces­sion in Har­rods, Lon­don.

Renowned for its for­ward think­ing and imag­i­na­tive de­signs, The Rug Com­pany’s in-house ex­perts have de­vel­oped their own en­vi­able ar­ray of rug de­signs in myr­iad colours and tex­tures that are al­ready be­com­ing de­sign clas­sics of the fu­ture. In 2000, The Rug Com­pany es­tab­lished its De­signer Col­lec­tion: a col­lab­o­ra­tion with 10 lead­ing de­sign­ers in­clud­ing Nina Camp­bell, Nicky Haslam and Cath Kid­ston. As its rep­u­ta­tion grew, some of the world’s lead­ing de­sign tal­ent joined the De­signer Col­lec­tion, in­clud­ing Paul Smith, Marni, Elie Saab, Vivi­enne West­wood, Alexan­der McQueen, Diane von Fursten­berg and Tom Dixon. Har­ness­ing the unique vi­sion of these world class de­sign­ers, The Rug Com­pany works closely with each one to cre­ate time­less, col­lectable pieces. Ser­vice is para­mount to the com­pany, and as such ev­ery cus­tomer can ex­pect a con­sul­ta­tion on how to choose the best rug for their home.

The wel­com­ing, in­ti­mate stores are a source of in­spi­ra­tion; how­ever, the ex­pert sales team also pro­vide home ser­vice by tak­ing rugs to a client’s home and pro­vid­ing con­sul­ta­tion. The Rug Com­pany also has a spe­cialised Be­spoke Ser­vice. The size, shape, pat­tern, yarn and colour of any de­sign can be eas­ily cus­tomised, or The Rug Com­pany Stu­dio is equipped to de­sign a rug from scratch for any spe­cial com­mis­sions. The Rug

Com­pany launched ex­quis­ite and en­tirely hand­made cush­ions and wall hang­ings was 2009, di­ver­si­fy­ing their port­fo­lio. The col­lec­tion con­tin­ues The Rug Com­pany’s phi­los­o­phy of metic­u­lous crafts­man­ship, orig­i­nal de­sign and the high­est qual­ity; each piece is made by hand, tak­ing upto 14 weeks to make.

Each piece is en­tirely hand­made, from the spin­ning of the wool to the weav­ing on the loom. It is unique and has been crafted by weavers in the Kath­mandu area, whose skills have been passed down through many gen­er­a­tions.

The Rug Com­pany sup­port the lo­cal skills and tra­di­tional crafts­man­ship, and to make a vi­tal con­tri­bu­tion to the econ­omy of Nepal. As well as be­ing a mem­ber of Good Weave, a non-profit that guar­an­tees no child labour is used, it con­tin­u­ally strives to im­prove the rug­mak­ing process both en­vi­ron­men­tally and eth­i­cally.

The Rug Com­pany has gone on to win var­i­ous world-class awards in­clud­ing the Elle Dec­o­ra­tion Bri­tish De­sign Brand of the Year at the Bri­tish De­sign Awards.

From ev­ery type of rug imag­in­able, that in­cludes cus­tom­ary In­dian dhur­ries to high-end de­sign­ers, such as Alexan­der McQueen and Vivi­enne West­wood, The Rug Com­pany has it all.
