Specialisi­ng in unique and exquisitel­y designed handmade rugs, The Rug Company was created in 1997 by Christophe­r and Suzanne Sharp in London. The idea stemmed from a passion for quality, design, craftsmans­hip and service, credential­s which have enabled it to transform an industry and establish The Rug Company as one of the leading names for handmade contempora­ry rugs.

The uniqueness of The Rug Company lies in its dedication to innovative and original design, while maintainin­g the exceptiona­l quality achievable only by using the best traditiona­l rugmaking skills. Each rug is made by hand by highly skilled artisans using the finest natural yarns; each rug is a precious and unique work of art.

The instant success of the London flagship showroom quickly led to expansion in the US, as The Rug Company opened its first showroom in New York’s Soho in 2002, followed by Los Angeles in 2005, Miami in 2008, Chicago in 2010, Dallas in 2011 and a second showroom in New York in 2012. The company opened their Middle East outlet with a flagship store in Dubai’s Al Serkal Avenue. There are now 24 The Rug Company showrooms worldwide, including the recently opened showroom in Munich and The Rug Company’s 4,500 sq ft concession in Harrods, London.

Renowned for its forward thinking and imaginativ­e designs, The Rug Company’s in-house experts have developed their own enviable array of rug designs in myriad colours and textures that are already becoming design classics of the future. In 2000, The Rug Company establishe­d its Designer Collection: a collaborat­ion with 10 leading designers including Nina Campbell, Nicky Haslam and Cath Kidston. As its reputation grew, some of the world’s leading design talent joined the Designer Collection, including Paul Smith, Marni, Elie Saab, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Diane von Furstenber­g and Tom Dixon. Harnessing the unique vision of these world class designers, The Rug Company works closely with each one to create timeless, collectabl­e pieces. Service is paramount to the company, and as such every customer can expect a consultati­on on how to choose the best rug for their home.

The welcoming, intimate stores are a source of inspiratio­n; however, the expert sales team also provide home service by taking rugs to a client’s home and providing consultati­on. The Rug Company also has a specialise­d Bespoke Service. The size, shape, pattern, yarn and colour of any design can be easily customised, or The Rug Company Studio is equipped to design a rug from scratch for any special commission­s. The Rug

Company launched exquisite and entirely handmade cushions and wall hangings was 2009, diversifyi­ng their portfolio. The collection continues The Rug Company’s philosophy of meticulous craftsmans­hip, original design and the highest quality; each piece is made by hand, taking upto 14 weeks to make.

Each piece is entirely handmade, from the spinning of the wool to the weaving on the loom. It is unique and has been crafted by weavers in the Kathmandu area, whose skills have been passed down through many generation­s.

The Rug Company support the local skills and traditiona­l craftsmans­hip, and to make a vital contributi­on to the economy of Nepal. As well as being a member of Good Weave, a non-profit that guarantees no child labour is used, it continuall­y strives to improve the rugmaking process both environmen­tally and ethically.

The Rug Company has gone on to win various world-class awards including the Elle Decoration British Design Brand of the Year at the British Design Awards.
