World Tourism Day event focuses on sustainability, development

The aim of the event was to raise awareness on the importance of environment and showcasing the impact of tourism on culture and economy of a country. The day is celebrated around the world on September 27. This year's theme was Sustainable Tourism — A Tool for Development.
Sami Salah, media co-ordinator of Minister of Tourism said, “This event was an attempt to raise awareness on the importance of tourism and preservation of our environmental and cultural components. The theme was to preserve the environment and the companies here are doing just that. MoT is making tremendous efforts to enhance Oman’s tourism offerings, the development of tourism activities and infrastructure.”
Abdullah al Husaini, sales executive from Seaoman said, “We undertake adventure water sports such as diving, sailing and other tours. Oman has some best places and we make sure that tourists visit them.”
Hailing the role of the UN's World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in reinforcing the role of tourism as a vital sector in world economies, H E Maitha Saif al Mahrouqi, Undersecretary in MoT said, “We are keen to attract international investors to the sultanate and are continuously coordinating with the UNWTO to sustain the development of tourism sector.”
