World Tourism Day event focuses on sustainabi­lity, developmen­t

The aim of the event was to raise awareness on the importance of environmen­t and showcasing the impact of tourism on culture and economy of a country. The day is celebrated around the world on September 27. This year's theme was Sustainabl­e Tourism — A Tool for Developmen­t.

Sami Salah, media co-ordinator of Minister of Tourism said, “This event was an attempt to raise awareness on the importance of tourism and preservati­on of our environmen­tal and cultural components. The theme was to preserve the environmen­t and the companies here are doing just that. MoT is making tremendous efforts to enhance Oman’s tourism offerings, the developmen­t of tourism activities and infrastruc­ture.”

Abdullah al Husaini, sales executive from Seaoman said, “We undertake adventure water sports such as diving, sailing and other tours. Oman has some best places and we make sure that tourists visit them.”

Hailing the role of the UN's World Tourism Organizati­on (UNWTO) in reinforcin­g the role of tourism as a vital sector in world economies, H E Maitha Saif al Mahrouqi, Undersecre­tary in MoT said, “We are keen to attract internatio­nal investors to the sultanate and are continuous­ly coordinati­ng with the UNWTO to sustain the developmen­t of tourism sector.”
